The Red Maple 2018 reading contest is getting underway at Davis.

The books are arriving and the classes are being introduced to the 10 fiction titles shortlisted for the Ontario Library Association’s Red Maple Award 2018. Students are free to choose to read as many as they would like; however, if they read a minimum of 5 titles they may vote for their favourite in April 2018.

Voting will take place across the province and what makes this award unique is that the Red Maple vote involves only votes from Grade 7 and Grade 8 students. By participating they are able to enjoy some of the best books being published in Canada.  There is a Red Maple bulletin board in the library where students keep track of what they’ve read and where they can rate their opinions on the books for others to review.  It’s always fun to see which title is voted as the favourite read among this age group.

We have 10 staff currently reading titles they’ve selected to champion for the contest.

The 10 titles shortlisted this year and our staff champions for them are:

  • And Then The Sky Exploded* by David A. Poulsen (Mrs. Crawford)
  • Bent Not Broken by Lorna Schulz Nicholson (Mrs. Carey)
  • Hawk* by Jennifer Dance (Mrs. Nussli)
  • Laura Monster Crusher* by Wesley King (Ms. Weatherup)
  • Run by David Skuy (Mrs. Burrowes)
  • Secret Path* by Gord Downie (Mr. Alischer)
  • Short for Chameleon* by Vicki Grant (Mrs. Ullerick)
