Tomorrow is a very special day at William G. Davis school. Please read on to find out what is happening.
World Autism Day is coming up! We all have our individual stories of knowing someone coping with autism. On April 2nd, let’s show our support for those who have autism.
Autism, what is it exactly? Is it a disease? Are people who have it, slow learners? Is it something that people should be against ? I remembered the first time I ever met a person with autism. On the outside, he looked like an ordinary kid with absolute no deficiency at all. However, the ways he did things was what made him different from everyone else. We became friends fast, but sometimes he was very self-centered, and that confused me because I didn’t grasp the concept of autism. Sometimes, he would be angry with me if I didn’t hang out with him, and after I told the teacher, we didn’t really hang out that much afterwards. Did he hate me? Or, did he just not want to talk to me? Or, was it me who distanced myself from him? After that experience, I definitely thought differently about people with autism. I don’t pity them, nor do I envy them. I feel happy for them. They can find expertise in the most unusual of topics. They are very deep thinkers and some of them are just down right geniuses. The world before thought kids with autism were a setback, but they are not. Perhaps now, people are still against them, but with more people everyday believing that they are no longer a setback, it still counts as progress.
The Global Issues Group has planned an Autism Awareness Day. We are holding a fundraiser on Friday, April, 1st, 2016 for “Autism Speaks.” We will have an all blue bake sale, a blue photo booth, and Razorbacks will be wearing blue to show their support. Also, we will be presenting a slideshow about Autism at the school assembly.
Join us in celebrating all kinds of diversity, including autism!
