The Red Maple 2016 reading contest has gotten underway a little earlier this year at Davis.
Students have been introduced to the 10 fiction titles shortlisted for the Ontario Library Association’s Red Maple Award and they are free to choose to read as many as they would like; however, if they read a minimum of 5 they may vote for their favourite in April 2016.
Voting will take place across the province and what makes this award unique is that the Red Maple vote is only from Grade 7 and Grade 8 students. By participating they are able to enjoy some of the best books being published in Canada. There is a Red Maple bulletin board in the library where students keep track of what they’ve read and where they can rate their opinions on the books for others to review. It’s always fun to see which title is voted as the favourite read among this age group.
The 10 titles selected this year are:
The Cat at the Wall by Deborah Ellis
The Dogs by Allan Stratton
Fragile Bones by Lorna Schultz Nicholson
The Gospel Truth by Caroline Pignat
Prison Boy by Sharon E. McKay
The Truth Commission by Susan Juby
Uncertain Soldier by Karen Bass
Walking Home by Eric Walters
We are all Made of Molecules by Susin Nielsen
Young Man with Camera by Emil Sher
